Title: Faster, Cleaner, Quieter: Digitalization of Marine Seismic Operations

The digitalization of all vessel data assets in a marine seismic fleet, complemented by various machine learning and free-text categorization tools, is described in several contexts: 1. Improved survey management and consistency, including efficiency, drag reduction, and inventory maintenance; 2. Reduced CO2 emissions driven by existing and proposed regulations affecting the global maritime industry; and 3. Higher data quality through less noise and better control of source and streamer geometries.

Safety is another consideration, and already recognized by industry awards. I will show that the three ambitions above are somewhat contradictory in a dynamic survey environment and cannot be predicted by simple pre-survey modeling. Initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint are particularly challenging but are achieved through a parallel set of solutions. Although such an outcome is not planned for regular use, I also include a sustained test where vessel operations ran independently and entirely under the control of a trained neural network.

Speaker Biography

Speaker: Andrew Long, PGS, Perth, Australia

Andrew Long has a Ph.D. in geophysics from the University of Western Australia. His career includes experience with land seismic acquisition and processing, and satellite altimetry R&D for producing marine gravity products. Following postdoctoral research in seismic imaging and crustal geophysics at Stanford University, he joined PGS in 1997. He is now Chief Geoscientist with interests in most areas of seismic technology and the quantitative interpretation of geophysical data.

Andrew was an SEG Honorary Lecturer for the Pacific South region in 2009 and has presented various courses on seismic-related geophysics for the SEG, EAGE and ASEG. He is a member of ASEG, EAGE and SEG.
