Abstract

The UK Poseidon CO₂ Injection Test: Pioneering Commercial Carbon Storage in the North Sea

With a new wave of early-stage Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects now under construction across NW Europe, this GESGB Evening Lecture will examine the transition of CCS from subsidy reliance to a commercially viable model for industrial decarbonisation.

We will share timely insights from Carbon Catalyst’s joint ventures with Perenco, Harbour Energy, and SEEL (Sumitomo), with a spotlight on the UK’s first CO₂ injection test for Carbon Capture and Storage. Conducted in a highly depleted natural gas reservoir in the Southern North Sea, this test has generated vital data demonstrating the feasibility of using highly depleted reservoirs for permanent geological CO₂ storage.

The Poseidon CO₂ injection test marks a major milestone in advancing offshore carbon storage, becoming the first global trial of its kind in an ultra-depleted gas reservoir. Conducted in an abandoned segment of the North Sea’s Leman field, the test aimed to prove the technical viability of safe, commercial-scale CO₂ storage, while also validating the reuse of existing infrastructure and next-generation monitoring technologies. Over a three-month winter window, around 3,500 tonnes of CO₂ were injected via a specially outfitted jack-up rig, using liquid phase CO₂ sourced from the Netherlands and transported offshore in cryogenic tanks.

In its fully operational phase, the Poseidon Project aims for an initial injection capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per year (Mtpa) from 2029, scaling to a peak injection of 40Mtpa. Located in the Leman gas field, the project offers a total storage potential of around 1 billion tonnes making it one of the world’s largest offshore CO2 transport and storage sites.

Poseidon will connect to the Perenco-operated Bacton Terminal in Norfolk and is strategically located to deliver decarbonisation solutions to East Anglia, London and the Southeast, as well as Continental Europe.

We will also explore how projects like Poseidon can help transition the CCS sector from a government-subsidised model to a commercially viable market, incorporating insights from industrial, finance and regulatory stakeholders.
