Topic: Full-waveform Inversion & FWI3: Revolutionising Seismic Imaging from Exploration to Production

Abstract

Full-waveform inversion (FWI) is transforming seismic imaging by delivering high-resolution models of the subsurface. This talk highlights recent advances, including next-generation FWI approaches (FWI3), and their impact across the seismic workflow, from exploration to production. By leveraging improved physics and computational techniques, these methods enhance model accuracy, reduce uncertainty, and support better decision-making in complex geological settings.

Speaker Biography

Yaser Gholami is a Full-Waveform Inversion (FWI) Specialist at SLB, supporting activities across the Eastern Hemisphere. He holds a PhD in FWI (2012), with a focus on anisotropic inversion methods. Yaser has extensive experience in seismic imaging, including FWI, tomography, and time processing, working with a wide range of datasets such as towed streamer (TS), ocean-bottom node (OBN), and ocean-bottom cable (OBC).

He previously worked at Viridian, contributing to advanced imaging projects across diverse geological settings. At SLB, his work focuses on next-generation FWI techniques, with particular emphasis on 4D FWI and land applications, spanning land, shallow-water, and deep-water environments.

This meeting is organised by the Geophysics SIG committee.
