Speaker: Pete Webb, Consultant Geoscientist and Educator

Topic: I am a STEM Ambassador

Abstract

Pete Webb has been a STEM Ambassador for five years. During that time, he has given well over 100 talks on geoscience to school pupils ranging in age from Years 2 to 13. The presentation methodology varies from a 2 hour face-to-face talk and PPT presentation on Rocks, Minerals and Fossils, with experiments and lots of hands on with hand specimens, through 30 minute Q&A virtual texting sessions arranged by an organisation called I’m A Scientist, to telling 6th formers about geoscience at school careers fairs. It has always been very rewarding, especially at primary level, where the children are very enthusiastic.

Pete’s talk is appropriately timed in that it comes two weeks after the launch of the Geol Soc’s This Is Geoscience campaign, which is designed to bring geoscience into greater public awareness, given the steadily decreasing provision of geoscience in schools and the threats to university geoscience departments. Being a STEM Ambassador is potentially one step towards achieving the aims of This Is Geoscience. Pete will explain how to become a STEM Ambassador and what’s involved.

This meeting is organised by the OT SIG committee.
