GESGB members are invited to register for the Whitby & Scarborough Fossil Hunting field trip.

📍 Location: North East Coast of England | Whitby & Scarborough
Meeting point to be provided to registered members

Day 1 | Friday 11 September 2026📍Whitby

A four-hour guided fossil tour in Whitby from 8:30am for a 9:00am start
– Meet up between Whitby and Saltwick Bay
– Walk of 2 miles for fossils

Group Lunch included at a famous fish and chip restaurant in Whitby from 1:00pm

Fossil preparation visit in the afternoon

Day 2 | Saturday 12 September 📍 Scarborough
Guided walk along South Beach by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to discover dinosaur footprints
Visit to The Rotunda Museum of Coastal Heritage and Geology, home to one of the UK’s foremost collections of Jurassic geology with a talk about William Smith’s input in the design of the first Geology Museum.

🏞️ Field Trip Overview

Explore millions of years of Earth history on this exciting two-day field trip to the Yorkshire Coast. Combining guided fieldwork, fossil discoveries and dinosaur footprints, this trip offers a memorable introduction to one of the UK’s most important geological regions.

The Rotunda Museum is one of the oldest purpose-built museums still in use in the UK. The curved grade II* listed building, which was built to a design suggested by William Smith, it houses one of the foremost collections of Jurassic geology on the Yorkshire Coast.

Whitby is one of the most iconic fossil localities on the Yorkshire coast, renowned for its rich Jurassic heritage and dramatic cliff scenery. While access to parts of the foreshore is tide-dependent, this trip is planned with a professional guide. The area is celebrated for its abundant ammonites, marine reptile remains and diverse shell beds, as well as for jet – fossilised wood from ancient conifer-like trees that became highly prized in Victorian jewellery.

🚗 Travel
All participants are required to make their own travel arrangements. Please bear in mind, you will need to use your own vehicle during this field trip. Suggestions on places to park will be suggested.

🏨 Accommodation
All participants will be responsible for making their own accommodation arrangements.

🥗 Catering
The GESGB field trip leader will be hosting a lunch on the first day, 11 September. The cost of lunch is included in the registration fee. Details of the restaurant will be provided to registered members. Participants are required to make all other catering arrangements.
