Trip Details

The PESGB are pleased to announce that ICL Boulby Mine have once again allowed visits to resume. The subsurface itinerary will be dependent upon the mining operations at the time of the visit.

In the past we have examined the polyhalite succession, the Boulby Halite, and associated carnalite and sylvinte seams. The different responses of these evaporites to over burden pressure will also be considered. There is also a possibility of examining other Formations on this occasion.

Field Trip Schedule

07.30 – Meet at the Boulby Mine visitor area and sign-in
08.30 – Mine safety induction for PESGB visitors
09.30 – Travel to mine changing area. Issue of overalls, boots, reflective clothing, frozen water, ear defenders, safety goggles, and gloves
10.30 – Visit to lamp room – issue with helmet and lamp and battery. Instructions for fitting and use.
11.00 – Travel in mineshaft to the subsurface.
11.20 – Begin subsurface
11.30 – Subsurface excursion – travel by Toyota four-wheel drive. Led by chief mine geologist and mine geologists
14.30 – Mineshaft back to the surface
15.00 – Shower and change
15.30 – Visit mine geology department for a Q&A session
16.30 – End of the field trip

Clothing and equipment
All safety clothing and equipment will be provided by ICL Boulby Ltd.

Travel and catering
All participants are required to make their own travel and catering arrangements.
