Abstract
IOG’s Development of the Blythe and Vulcan Satellites Hubs
A low Carbon Project in the mature UK Southern Gas Basin
Guest speakers: Andrew Hockey & Phil Cox – Independent Oil and Gas
On March 6th 1967 the first natural gas from the UK Southern North Sea came ashore from the West Sole Field. Harold Wilson was still Prime Minister and the Beatles were No.2 in the charts! Almost 54 years later, notwithstanding the exit of major players, changes in licence ownership, a reduction in available infrastructure and an increase in LNG and pipeline imports, gas from the basin continues to satisfy a significant percentage of the UK’s daily gas demand.
IOG, as a small but agile AIM-listed operator saw an opportunity at this mature stage of the Southern Gas Basin’s life to build a portfolio of gas assets in the classic Permian Rotliegend play. Phase 1 of our development of the Blythe Hub and Vulcan Satellites Hub is underway having passed Final Investment Decision in 2019 and Field Development Plan approval this year.
Our project involves material reprocessing of existing 3D to optimise our subsurface understanding allowing us to unlock previously overlooked discoveries. Along with the re-use of the previously decommissioned Thames pipeline, the fabrication and installation of unmanned infrastructure and the refurbishment of our route to market at Bacton Gas Terminal. All of this adds up to a sustainable low carbon addition to the UK’s energy mix.
