Title: Seismology in the freezer: fibre-optic technology in glacier surveying
Overview: Seismic surveying plays a valuable role in characterising glaciers and ice masses. Measuring the seismic properties of ice and the material beneath it improves the representation of the glacier system in predictive models of ice dynamics and forecasts of sea-level rise. Many of the acquisition and processing methods that are commonplace within the exploration sector have found an application within glaciology and, recently, this extends to fibre-optic Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology. In this seminar, we’ll explore the use of seismology in glaciology, focusing on recent borehole deployments of DAS on the Greenland Ice Sheet.
Speaker Information
Dr Adam Booth – Associate Professor of Applied Geophysics
Dr Adam Booth is an Associate Professor of Applied Geophysics in the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds. He gained his PhD from Leeds in 2008, but then undertook postdoctoral positions at Swansea University and Imperial College London. Over the last 12 years, his research has involved the quantitative use of geophysics to characterise glaciers and ice masses, and he has conducted field deployments in both Arctic and Antarctic settings. Additionally, he contributes to archaeological geophysical investigations, and has consulted to Scottish Nature on the application of radar methods to characterise animal burrows. He regularly tries to plant a seed of interest in geophysical field methods with students on Leeds’ MSc Exploration Geophysics programme, and during two years of project management for the EAGE’s Geophysics Bootcamp.
