Abstract

Mineral Exploration at the Arthrath Ni-Cu-Co Sulphide Deposit, Aberdeenshire: an Overview

Magmatic nickel-copper-cobalt sulphides were discovered at Arthrath by Rio Tinto Zinc in 1968 and the site remains the largest known nickel deposit in the UK. Sulphides occur as a camp-scale cluster of deposits and prospects located within a 7 km long, dyke-like, mafic-ultramafic intrusion branching from one of the multiple large, 470 Ma gabbroic bodies formed across NE Scotland during the Caledonian Orogeny.

The talk will discuss the prospectivity of the district and the opportunity being developed through the application of modern geological models and exploration technologies. Exploration progress using airborne geophysical surveys, ground-based geophysics and drilling will be presented, and there will also be a preview of the company’s planned work in the area in its search for domestic supplies of critical raw materials to support the energy transition.
