Abstract

Wave Equation Based AVO Inversion – The Next Generation of AVO

In 2012 Delft Inversion introduced the Wave Equation Based AVO (WEB-AVO) Technique to our industry and it has been successfully applied in project globally steadily demonstrating why it is the next generation of AVO.

In this talk I will introduce the method, its key differences and benefits to conventional AVO inversion schemes and then show its application to a series of projects from Australia, China and the North Sea. The case studies investigate how WEB-AVO was used to extract valuable new information in challenging situations where conventional schemes were struggling because of complexity in the wavefield. We will look at the impact of coals, marks, carbonates and low saturation gas (fizz-gas) on AVO Inversion studies.

Peter Haffinger – Co-founder and Technical Director, Delft Inversion

Peter has been a member of Delft Inversion since 2012, a company he co-founded and where he now serves as the Technical Director. His main job is to lead the development of the company’s proprietary software called HELIOS and to plan and execurte the company’s research agenda.

He earned a Ph.D. in Geophysics from the Delft University of Technology. Peter was also one of the first students to join a special program called the IDEA League Joint Master Programme in Applied Geophysics, which is a partnership between three of Europe’s leading universities: ETH Zurich, RWTH Aachen, and TU Delft.

Before starting Delft Inversion, Peter worked on research projects with two companies, Western Geco in the UK and the Saudi Aramco Advanced Research Center in Saudi Arabia. These experiences provided him with valuable industry experience during his academic career already.

Outside of work, Peter remains active in the geophysics community. He was the chair of the SEG Advanced Modelling Corporation (SEAM) and helped start a local chapter of the European Association of Geophysics in Germany. He also gives his time to his hometown of Trier, Germany, where he is an elected member of the Advisory Board to the City Council.

Panos Doulgeris – Co-founder and Managing Director, Delft Inversion

Panos is an accomplished geoscientist and entrepreneur who is deeply enthusiastic about leveraging cutting-edge technology for exploration. He earned an engineering diploma from Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece, and completed his PhD in geophysics at TU Delft in the Netherlands. He is one of the founders of Delft Inversion and presently holds the position of managing director, with a focus on overseeing the organization’s overall performance and global operations.

Panos is a firm believer in the power of technology and geosciences to promote a more sustainable energy future. His involvement in developing reservoir characterization projects across the globe has given him the opportunity to  collaborate with professionals from various scientific and ethnic backgrounds, leading to valuable insights into the
