Abstract

Hydrogen Offers Many Opportunities in the Energy Transition Including the Repurposing of Depleted Oilfields

Hydrogen is the most abundant chemical substance in the Universe, constituting roughly 75% of all normal matter with stars such as the sun mainly composed of hydrogen in a plasma state.  It holds the promise of a cleaner, more flexible energy system with potential to play a key role in the Energy Transition.

This talk explores the role of oil fields in hydrogen production: complex geoscience, together with dynamic reservoir, reaction kinetics and advanced compositional simulation models show that hydrogen production can extend the asset life of an oil field by 10 to 40 years. It discusses two existing technologies which are used in generating carbon net-zero hydrogen within reservoirs from the waste residual oil – InSitu Oxidation (ISO) of the crude oil and reservoir brine, and Carbon Sequestration (CCS) – and how they can be utilised to maximise economic and sustainable value in the conversion of a depleted oil field in to a hydrogen field.

Speaker Biography

Dr Stuart Lake, Non-Exec Director – Vedra-Hydrogen

Stuart is a Non-Executive Director and Investor in Vedra-Hydrogen Ltd and also President of Durrant Petroleum LLC. He graduated from Durham University with a Geoscience PhD and has been employed in the energy industry for over 35 years.

With a wealth of experience in the field of oil and gas, he initially worked for Shell, Apache and Hess in a variety of E&P roles and leadership positions with a successful record operating in over 20 countries. Transferring his knowledge into executive management, he then operated as CEO in three independent E&P companies and has held a number of NED/Chairman roles over the past 10+ years on public, private and University Boards globally.

Stuart now works and invests in both sides of the energy transition from oil and gas exploration to carbon flaring reduction and the use of hydrogen. An active member of GESGB, AAPG, SEAPEX and the Frontier Energy Network, he has also published and taught extensively.
