The Pensacola Zechstein Discovery – An oil play in the UK SNS?

The Zechstein aged carbonate reefs of the Southern North Sea have remained an enigmatic target, with accidental discoveries often leading to more questions than answers. The Pensacola reef started life on a mixture of legacy 2 & 3D data, with multiple interpretations of its possible shape, its original name “the String of Pearls” highlighting the difficulties in imaging and depth conversion. Building on previous licensees work, Deltic Energy (then Cluff) managed to convince Shell to return to exploration in the SNS, where they had not shot an exploration seismic survey for 25 years, to explore for a carbonate reef in a basin most well-known for its sand dunes.

After a successful seismic shoot, rigorous regional technical work and a pandemic, the joint venture spudded the Pensacola exploration well in November 2022. Identifying the top of the reef proved complex, with multiple depositional models being tested in one location, but after a nail biting Christmas Day, gas and oil shows in carbonates were reported. An extensive data collection programme was launched to try to fully characterise what is now thought to be the largest gas discovery in a decade in the SNS, as well as possibly its largest oil discovery, with 35 API oil being produced on test.

Speaker Biography

Tom Cafferkey, Subsurface Team Lead – Deltic Energy Plc
Tom is the Subsurface Team Lead at Deltic Energy, who he joined in 2018, then known as Cluff Natural Resources. Recently he has been working on two SNS drilling projects which Deltic successfully farmed down to Shell in 2019, as well as working towards new opportunities by participating in the recent 33rd UKCS Licensing Round.

Tom was previously with GDF/ENGIE in London, working on near field exploration drilling around the Cygnus field and on HPHT CNS projects such as Taggart, Dalziel and Manhattan. Prior to this he worked at Egdon Resources, gaining a great insight into UK Onshore operations and geology, as well as experiencing all the various problems of multi vintage paper seismic data. He attended Imperial College and Royal Holloway and specialises in geology.

Deltic Energy Plc is a London based oil and gas exploration business investing in the UK’s proven hydrocarbon provinces where it currently holds significant equity positions in a number of highly prospective licences in the Southern and Central North Sea. Deltic farmed down interests in the Pensacola and Selene SNS prospects to Shell in 2019, which has lead to a major discovery at Pensacola in January 2023 and a firm well planned on Selene for 2024.
