Course Description

A detailed look at the basics of (marine) seismic data processing

Facilitator: Gareth Williams, Geophysicist

This course provides a non-mathematical look at the concepts behind some key stages of seismic data processing. Aimed at non-geophysicists who would like a better understanding when talking to geophysicists, it provides a framework covering key stages. Basic terminology is described before moving into the details and examples. Some exercises are provided for participants to do in their own time. The course is divided into 4 sections.

Part 1 | Geometry and kinematics
Date:
19 June 2023
Time
6:00pm – 8:00pm

Ray traced kinematics from a simple constant velocity earth model to an anisotropic inhomogeneous earth are described. The concepts of normal and higher order moveout as well as migration are explained. Semblance based velocity analysis, tomography and FWI are introduced conceptually.

Part 2 | Transforms
Date:
21 June 2023
Time: 6:00pm – 8:00pm

Lateral and temporal sampling and aliasing are introduced using synthetic examples. The Tau-p and high resolution Radon transforms are similarly explained together with their sampling requirements and applications.

Part 3 | Resolution and broadband
Date:
26 June 2023
Time:
6:00pm – 8:00pm

Resolution is defined and the importance of bandwidth is explained before looking at source signatures and broadband processing for marine sources.

Part 3 | Multiples
Date:
28 June 2023
Time:
6:00pm – 8:00pm

Various types of multiple are introduced using ray traced diagrams before key features and requirements of multiple attenuation techniques are explained.

Who should attend:
