Course Description

Non-Seismic Geophysical Methods for O&G Exploration and the Energy Transition

Part 1 | Gravity and magnetics in exploration
Date: 01 November 2022
Time: 6:00pm – 8:00pm (GMT)
Facilitators: Jonathan Watson and Dr Gary Barnes – Bridgeporth

General overview giving historical summary, overview of methods, data acquisition and processing considerations and basic concepts.
A number of case studies will be used to look at data resolution, coming down from regional scale exploration to high-resolution applications. Will also cover integrated interpretation with seismic data and benefits to seismic planning.

Part 2 | Gravity Gradiometry – Introduction and case studies
Date: 03 November 2022
Time: 6:00pm – 8:00pm (GMT)
Facilitators: Jonathan Watson and Dr Gary Barnes – Bridgeporth

Gravity gradiometry represents the highest resolution airborne datasets currently available. The session will cover the historical development of instrumentation, resolution, survey considerations. A number of case studies from different geological settings will be used to showcase the applications and integration with additional datasets.

Part 3 | Other non-seismic methods and applications in non-oil & gas exploration
Date: 07 November 2022
Time: 6:00pm – 8:00pm (GMT)
Facilitators: Jonathan Watson and Dr Gary Barnes – Bridgeporth

Facilitator Biographies

Jonathan Watson – General Manager, Bridgeporth
Jonathan has over 20 years’ experience in both the mining and hydrocarbon industries. Starting work with the acquisition and processing of potential field data, then moving onto interpretation, Jonathan has expertise in the integration of potential field data, with complimentary datasets and particularly seismic data, to produce combined geological and geophysical solutions. As well as presenting numerous papers at international conferences, Jonathan has also been heavily involved in academic work, acting as an external project supervisor to the Imperial College Petroleum Engineering MSc course for several years.

Jonathan has a Physical Geography/Geology degree from Manchester and a MRes in Earth Sciences from University of London.

Dr Gary Barnes – Chief Scientist, Bridgeporth
Gary has over 18 years’ experience within the potential fields industry specialising in gravity and gravity gradiometry instrumentation, processing and analysis. At Bridgeporth he collaboratively develops techniques that enhance the quality and use of potential field data to improve the understanding of sub-surface geology. Previously, he was a founding member of a technology driven airborne data acquisition company and headed geophysical software development. Prior to that, he worked as a senior project engineer for Oxford Instruments, modelling the magnetic fields around superconducting components.

Gary has a degree in Physics from the University of Birmingham, a D.Phil in engineering science from the University of Oxford, and graduate certificates in Geology from the University of London.
