About

The OGA 31st Frontier Licence Round is scheduled to include the East Shetland Platform area and the PESGB, with support from the OGA, will be running a field trip to the Orkney Islands to examine the geology of the area. Essential tourist sites will also be visited. The trip will be co-led by Professor John Marshall (University of Southampton) and Dr John Flett Brown (Consultant) who are both experts on Orkney geology.

As well as its rich archaeological heritage Orkney also possesses excellent Devonian outcrops which span most of the Devonian and include aeolian, lacustrine and fluvial sediments. It provides a better representation of likely East Shetland Platform Devonian geology than Shetland itself. There is also an exhumed, 1 Billion barrel oil field that will be visited at outcrop! The trip will focus on the regional geology and petroleum potential of the area and its implications for the offshore.

The trip will assemble in Stromness (Orkney) on the evening of the 20 September and will end late afternoon on Sunday 23 September.
