Topic: Mineralisation/carbonation: An introduction to its contribution to CCUS, how it can help heavy industries reach their NetZero goals while introducing Carbon8’s Accelerated Carbonation Technology
Abstract
Dramatic reductions in CO2 emissions are an absolute necessity if global warming is to be kept below 1.5oC by 2050. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is the principal route that is going to be able to deal with the large quantities of CO2 generated by heavy industry. Although the necessity and potential of CCS is vast, it also requires energy intensive capture technologies and extensive infrastructure to deliver the CO2 to the storage sites. Carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technologies can complement industry NetZero Roadmaps that include CCS.
The technology readiness of CCUS technologies are further developed and in the commercialisation stage of deployment. Specifically, amongst the range of CCU technologies that have been developed, carbonation and mineralisation solutions offer several advantages, including the permanent sequestration of the carbon. Several companies are already delivering carbon emission reductions through a variety of different manifestations carbonation technologies.
Carbon8 is one of these companies with a solution that can help hard-to-abate industries including cement, Energy from Waste, steel, and paper, achieve their NetZero targets. Heavy industries like these are currently responsible for over 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon8’s patented ACT (Accelerated Carbonation Technology) process combines industrial residues with captured CO₂ emissions to produce low carbon and carbon negative products. The CO2ntainer is the realization of Carbon8’s technology as a Plug ‘n Play solution, which is scalable and modular. The solution can be deployed directly to an industrial site, capturing carbon from the point source, and permanently storing it in the output materials of the ACT process.
Carbonation and mineralization has the potential to capture up to 3.5 Gt of CO2 per year, generating a revenue of over $300 billion per year.
