Speaker Biography

Speaker: Jane Whaley, Geologist

Jane has worked in the O&G industry for over 40 years. She studied geology at Bristol University and started work in offshore shallow seismic surveys with Decca Survey (with Richard M-W) in 1977 – the first woman they had employed – working predominantly in the North Sea. In 1980 she joined Comap GeoSurveys, undertaking surveys in the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico and Arabian Gulf. She then spent 6 years in Bahrain and 4 in Wiltshire, freelancing in geophysical interpretation, before moving to Dublin where she helped set up the Irish Marine Data Centre, specialising in geophysical and hydrographic data.

In 1996 she moved to Gloucestershire and until 2004 headed the IHS Technical Studies team. She then spent several years both as a consultant and writing articles for GEO ExPro Magazine, before becoming editor in chief of the magazine in 2010. She left that role at the end of 2020 and is now enjoying a more leisurely life but still enjoys writing about and researching the energy industry.
