2024 GESGB Council Elections: Aberdeen Director Elect – VOTE NOW!

Thu 12 October 2023

Category: Community, Council

The GESGB is a membership society that is governed by the members (through the Council) for the benefit of the wider membership.

The Council play a very active role within the society, their ideas, advice, and support are invaluable.  The changes in the world over the last few years have shaped the society. The focus has been on building long-term sustainability of the GESGB and giving the members a voice in its future.

Nominations for our 2024 council are now closed and it is time to vote for your Aberdeen Director Elect.

Aberdeen is a regional area that’s ripe for ideas around membership engagement. If you want to influence the ‘offer’ for Aberdeen, plan and host the Aberdeen lectures (with the Aberdeen Director) and are willing to play an active part in the staging of DEVEX then this is a great role.

  • Organises Granite City Reception
  • Chairs Aberdeen Evening Lectures if Director Aberdeen not present
  • Shadows Aberdeen Director in DEVEX role.
  • Builds relationships with other societies operating in Aberdeen to add value to the membership and conference offer.

Meet the candidates…

Ali Karagul

He joined GSI as a Field Seismologist where he has worked in field crews in Middle East. In 1989, he joined CGG as processing geophysicist and worked in Asia, Middle East, Europe and North America.

He continued as a Geophysical Advisor until moving to TOTAL E&P Aberdeen, UK in 2014 as Senior Operations Geophysicist. As an active Geoscientist, in this era of Energy Transition, I would like to help our society to better integrate with our industry and other institutions to promote our Geoscience field.

I am currently based in Aberdeen, being as the Director of Aberdeen Elect, I will have the possibility to help our colleagues and industry.

Niall Mark

I am delighted to be nominated as a candidate for the Aberdeen Elect role of the GESGB.

I have been a member of the GESGB for several years and strongly believe in the societies importance for building the geoscience community through education and networking opportunities.

In the past year I have served as a member on the GESGB YP committee organising social events in Aberdeen, including supporting the delivery of EGC1.

Through my YP role I have seen the excellent work the GESGB team does, and if elected look forward to working with Andy to deliver more great events to Aberdeen.
I currently work as a development geologist for Ithaca Energy working in the Central North Sea team, joining Ithaca from Siccar Point Energy where I worked as a member of the West of Shetland exploration team.

Prior to joining industry, I studied a MSC and PhD at the University of Aberdeen, where my strong links to the Aberdeen oil industry and the GESGB began.
When I joined industry GESGB events were so important for building my network and developing my skills, so if elected I would be honoured to play a part in continuing to provide evening lectures and social networking events for all members.

I feel the energy industry is in an exciting period where we are beginning to see interest and real momentum behind the energy transition. If elected I want to build on the excitement surround the energy transition to bring new young members to the society, whilst continuing to promote the oil industry.
