Surrey Branch | Review by John Underhill

Thu 07 April 2022

Some say that a Full Moon marks an auspicious occasion, and this was certainly true for the PESGB Surrey Branch in March 2022. This was only the second time that the branch could meet in the flesh for almost 2 years and one of the few physical events that the PESGB had held since Covid took hold in England in March 2020. The industry and people’s job status have changed dramatically in the time we have all been apart and there is still much to catch up on. The pub was buzzing with a crowd of 50-70 people, swelled by groups attending from amongst others, TGS, Petrotrace and retired folk from ExxonMobil. Distance to attending this meeting was no barrier and we were honoured to welcome John Underhill who had travelled all the way from Edinburgh to join us. The tag line for the branch being the “largest and longest running group” certainly rang true that night.

John Underhill, Professor for Geoscience & Energy Transition at Heriot-Watt University said:

Having heard many good things about the Surrey Branch of the PESGB, it was great to be able to make it along to savour the atmosphere first hand. I was impressed by the turn out and found a warm welcome extended. It was great to catch up with old colleagues, meet people who’d I’d only interacted with virtually and make new friends. The conversations were rich and diverse ranging from the future of UKCS exploration, to COP26 and the implications of both for investment in the energy transition. The event was a great success that reflects well on the organisers and hosts, Sarah-Jane Kelland, Hannah Kearns and Howard Nicholls, the staff at the White House, the PESGB and TGS, who provided generous sponsorship for the evening. Given the chance, I would certainly return.”

The PESGB Surrey Branch meets on the third Wednesday of every odd month in the White House pub Guildford. Anyone is welcome to attend and if you are coming to the south-east for a meeting, why not arrange to join us for the evening? We do not have an evening lecture but are a networking group with a large membership. Do come along to one of our meetings if you are free or are in the area. Our next meeting will be our Silver Anniversary event on May 18th 2022, which will be the annual Hash run. Supporters welcome.
